Zindagi Gulzar Hai - Lyrics Translations

So this is my first blog written purely on a request- translations of Zindgai Gulzar Hai's female version. I have also added Ali Zafar's version as an added bonus J

Again- I AM NOT an Urdu speaker but a Hindi one- to be honest this Ghazal quite flummoxed me! Still not sure I understand it fully. It is obviously Khashaf's point of view vs the male voice which is Zaroon's. I guess it shows in a way she is more introspective and has faced much harsher realities than him- even though by the standards of his peers he is shown to be quite self aware and introspective too.

Some of my favorite parts of the show was when they would both be writing in their respective diaries!!!

To know my opinion about the show- WHICH DID NOT disappoint- please see my other blog- titled

Here's another link for the song

Zindagi Khaak Na thi Translation in English

Full lyrics of the OST sung by Hadiqa Kiani below.
Written by Naseer Turabi.

Zindagi khaak na thi khaak uratay guzri
Life wasn't (like) ash (but) it was spent in blowing ashes (wasting time)
Tujh say kya kehtay teray pass jo aatay guzri
What could I have told you- it was spent in coming close to you

Din jo guzra toh kisi yaad ki ro main guzra
The day was spent in revisiting some memories
Shaam aayi toh koi khuwaab dikhatay guzri
When Evening came it was spent in showing me some dreams

Acchay waqton ki tamana main rahi umr-e-rawaan
Life was spent in wanting good times
Waqt aisa tha kay bus naaz uthatay guzri
The Time was such that is was spent in keeping up with (my) Pride

Zindagi jis kay muqadar main ho khushiyan teri
Life, whose destiny has your happiness in its hand
Ussko aata hai nibhana so nibhatay guzri
It knows how to fulfill (it) so it was spent in fulfilling

Zindagi naam udher hai kisi sarshaari ka
Life is the name out there for some intoxication
Aur udher door say aik aas lagatay guzri
And from far away there, it was spent in hoping for one wish

Raat kya aayi kay tanhaai ki sarghoshi main
The night came with the whisperings of loneliness
Hoo ka aalam tha magar suntay sunatay guzri
There was pin drop silence but it was spent in listening and speaking (communicating- maybe silently?)

Zindagi Naam Udher Hai Kisi Sarshaari Ka
Life is the name out there for some intoxication
Baarha choonk si jaati hai musaafat dil ki
The distance in the heart gets very shocked

Kis ki awaaz thi yeh kis ko bulatay guzri...
Who's voice was this? Who was it spent in calling?

Zindagi Gulzar Hai- title song by Ali Zafar Translation in English

Zindagi Gulzaar Hay
Life is garden of flowers,
Humko Iss Se Pyaar Hay
We are in love with it

Aana Ek Baar Hay
It comes once
 Kho Dena Bekaar Hay
It would be useless to lose it

Zindagi .. Zindagi ..
Life….. Life….

Zindagi Gulzaar Hay
Life is garden of flowers,
Yeh Ishq Ka Darbar Hay
It is a court of love

Kisi Ke Ghum ...Ko Baant-ta
Sharing Someone's sorrow
Hee Pyaar Hay
Is what love is
Yeh Pyaar Hay
This is love

Zindagi Gulzaar Hay
Life is garden of flowers,
Yeh Ishq Ka Darbar Hay
It is a court of love
Yahan Ghumo Ko Palna
Brooding on sorrows out here
...Bekaar Hai
Is useless
Haan bekaar hai
Yes- it's useless

Yahaan titliyaan muskurati hain
Butterflies smile here
Toh geeton mein dhal jati hai
The disappear into music

Yahaan jugnoo jab jagmagate hain
When Fireflies shine here
Toh rang ban jaate hain
They become color

Yeh mana ke aankhon mein ansoo hain
Agreed we have tears in our eyes
Dilon mein basi bebasi
And hopelessness in our hearts

Chalo yeh bhi mana ke apno se behter hai ajnabi
Also agreed that strangers are better than our own (family)

Yahaan raaste dushwaar hain
The roads here are hard (difficult)
Aur manzilein us paar hain
And destinations are on the other side

Magar isse.. jeene ko dil tayyar hai
But to live it- this heart is ready
Ho tayyar hai
Yes it's ready

Zindagi Gulzaar Hay
Life is garden of flowers,
Yeh Ishq Ka Darbar Hay
It is a court of love

Kisi Ke Ghum ...Ko Baant-ta
Sharing Someone's sorrow
Hee Pyaar Hay
Is what love is
Yeh Pyaar Hay
This is love

thank you so much :). the request for the song's translation on your blog "woh humsafar tha" was my first comment ever on any blog post. i was in doubt about whether you would respond to random requests(and that too so quickly!!), let alone write an entire blog with a bonus entry ,which is again so wonderful. thank you very much!! you are awesome:)

It is Atif again.. :)

I must say meenakshi that you have started to impress me. Because most of the Indians got 'Zindagi khaak na thi' wordings wrong. Even some Pakistanis too. But you got it perrrrfectly.

Thanks Guys. To be honest- I just didn't fully know about 5 words of the song- the rest I knew from the language spoken around me while growing up. I have of course also read many books and comics in Hindi which i think makes the biggest difference in Vocabulary.

Hi Meenakshi. I'm here on your blog for the first time. I watched Zindagi gulzar Hai recently on Zee Zindagi and obviously loved it. I was searching for the translation of few words from the female version. Thanks for sharing it.
PS: Do you have any link to the complete song? I mean the one I found online was only three stanzas.

Dear Ms. Garodia,
I appreciate your efforts to translate the 'zindagi khaak na thi ghazal'.
I would like to point out that "Tujh say kya kehtay teray pass jo aatay guzri" actually means how could I have told you what happened to me/what occurred as I was coming to see you.

Thank you, for taking the time to help the rest of us out though.
Regards,
Noor

Noor- can you share where you got the meaning from? I have been thinking about it. For it to mean what you say it may - don't you think the lyrics would have been
"Tujh say kya kehtay teray pass KYA aatay guzri". You are saying the the "Jo" is associated with "guzri". I'm not yet convinced but open to being!

Hi Meenakshiji,
Many thanks for the lyrics and the translations which were great and would give anyone a good idea of the meaning of the songs.
You say that you are a Hindi speaking person rather than Urdu but in general, Hindi and Urdu share the same grammatical structure as well as most of the vocabulary, about 70%. This fact I have discovered from trying to learn the languages properly through textbooks I have purchased here in the UK.
I really enjoy watching Zindagi Gulzar Hai although I missed the majority of it and watched it from episode 19. Some of the Pakistani dramas are great and a good way to learn Hindi / Urdu.
I still remember watching "Tanhaiyan" and "Dhoop Kinarey".

Arun- I think the similarity of Urdu/ hindi is what makes it easy for me to translate. You can actually find all the episodes of all these shows online- Zindagi was most interesting in the begining. Thanks for reading!

as far as i know, 'khaak' is earth/soil/dust, not ashes.

ashes is 'raakh'

MG said...

actually Khaak can be used for Dust as well as ashes. In this- given it is used along with "Khaak Uranna" ashes is the more pertinent use- at lest according to me. :)

Meenakshi where did you get the full ghazal " Zindadi khaak na thi" because I did not find all the lines that you had mentioned in the song online. These lines were missing
Zindagi jis kay muqadar main ho khushiyan teri
Ussko aata hai nibhana so nibhatay guzri
Zindagi naam udher hai kisi sarshaari ka
Aur udher door say aik aas lagatay guzri

From where did you get them? I want to listen. Can you please share the link?

HI Akanksha,
I went through the show- there were odd paragraphs put in here and there- I compiled them into one set of lyrics. Not sure if all the lyrics are together in one place.
Thanks for reading- will be updating with an awesome new show soon!

Thank you so much for your effort with the lyrics! However, the link for the female version of the song does not work. I was not able to find the complete female version of the song (corresponding to your lyrics) anywhere on You tube. Could you please direct me, if possible? I would be eternally grateful!
